I've heard EMDR called a disk cleanup for the brain

I've heard EMDR called a disk cleanup for the brain.

Disk cleanup is a laptop job. The screen looks ordinary. The fan is loud anyway. Old downloads sit in a folder you never open, and a cache never got emptied. You closed the tabs but something still feels busy.

I use EMDR, and that's the picture people already have when they write.

You're answering an email that asked if you can do Thursday. You're writing yes, and an old file opens. You didn't click it. A song did it, or a tone in an email. You were already in the middle of a reply. Then the rest of the afternoon has to share the machine with a folder from another year. You finish the small thing anyway. The folder stays open in the background.

Disk cleanup is how people say they want that folder to take less room.

On a computer, cleanup is one pass through what piled up. You look at what it found. Some of it is junk you forgot you saved. Some of it you leave because you aren't ready to decide. The computer is still your computer when you're done clicking.

I mean that time at the computer, on a menu you already know.

You already know where the menu lives. You've hovered over it more than once. Last time you didn't have twenty minutes. Or you had twenty minutes and you closed the lid because a name on the list was enough for one afternoon. You angled the laptop away even though nobody was in the room.

You're waiting on a progress bar that barely moves. You check your phone. You check the progress bar. You already know the file is large. You still sit there. You let it run. You walk off. You come back and the progress bar has barely moved, and you sit down again.

Later the desktop looks ordinary again. The fan is still loud, because a laptop does that. The download folder you don't show anyone is still there. You know the names in it.

Something from another year can take the rest of the afternoon while you're still trying to finish the reply. You send it. You put the phone down. You're still sharing the day with a year you didn't mean to open.

You still have a week to get through. The old year doesn't wait for a quiet week. It takes room while you're trying to stay in Thursday.

You want that year to take less room, and the names are still there.

If this is familiar, write me. We can set a free consultation so I can answer your questions.
