The body still on watch is not failed healing
I don't treat a night that will not go still as proof the work failed. The body still on watch is not failed healing.
I hear people use the night as a grade. The talking happened. A stretch even looked better from the outside. Then rest will not come, or it comes and dumps someone back at two, already on duty.
People want a clean test. If the shoulders drop and sleep holds, something moved. If two in the morning is still loud, they decide they are behind. I don't grade it that way.
Not being able to rest after trauma can be the body still on watch. The job got learned when rest was not safe. A calmer week does not take it off. The body does not read the week the way a calendar does.
I am not offering a trick for falling asleep. I mean the shift that stays on after the door is locked and the room is dark, when some part of the body is still listening for a sound that has not come. The listening is older than this room. It does not care that the lock already turned.
It gets loud on a quiet night. It eases on a packed day, when there is plenty to do, and then it is there the minute there is nothing left except lying down. People decide rest is the problem. Rest is only the hour with no other job. A full Tuesday can look like movement. Tuesday night can look like a fall. I don't read those two as opposites.
I want that hour more than the private tally. Water nobody needed. The kitchen is ordinary, and the clock is rude. A pipe ticks and the body is already sitting up. Then the annoyance at sitting up, which does not put anyone back down. I can stay in that hour without grading it.
Someone else in the house is already asleep. Envy shows up, then dislike of the envy, then extra stillness so they don't wake. That is still staying on watch. I am not looking for a story about what is wrong with the person who cannot drop.
A Saturday can be empty on purpose, a show someone actually likes, and the other room still gets checked, the stove, the lock. Nobody sat down and chose that. The body kept the shift. Checking the lock again is the leftover job, looking for work.
Morning can look ordinary, coffee and a face that will pass, and the night still sits there as evidence. People say they are light sleepers. That sentence is easier than the rest of it.
I get the wish that the work would unclench a jaw, or make a pillow enough. A hard night is not evidence that none of the work counted. I can't promise the next night will be kinder. I can say staying on watch is not a grade on the work.
I am not going to name a date when it clocks out. I can stay with how little rest there has been.
