You don't need proof to say you felt like you didn't matter
"Mom still calls me by my brother's name."
"I was the kid who got picked up last. Every time."
"They spelled my name wrong on the graduation program, and honestly, on brand."
People say these with a laugh, and I laugh too. It's a good way to get a hard thing onto the table. But sometimes the laugh runs out, and what's left is the plain version: "I grew up feeling like I didn't matter." People say that, in those words. Not "my parents were difficult." Not a story with a villain. Just that one sentence.
My opinion is that it's a whole sentence. It doesn't need a footnote.
When someone says it, the next move is often to check it. Was there food? Was there a roof? Did anyone hit me? If the answers come back fine, the sentence gets filed under dramatic. Somebody had it worse, so mine must be small. I get why people do that. But mattering isn't on the list. It's the stuff a list leaves out. Somebody asking how your day went and waiting for the answer. Somebody noticing you went quiet. A face that looked up when you walked in. A house can have everything on the checklist and still be short on that.
I also don't think the feeling needs a date. Some people can point to the day. Maybe you can't. Maybe it was a lot of ordinary evenings where nothing happened, and that's the whole point, nothing happened. There's no receipt for an evening like that. I don't think the feeling counts less because you can't produce one.
The comparison doesn't help either. Somebody having it worse doesn't shrink your sentence. Two people can both have something real to say, and nobody has to rank them first. You don't have to win an argument with anyone to be allowed to say it.
If the sentence is yours, it's yours to say the way it comes out. Plain is fine. A short version is fine. "I grew up feeling like I didn't matter" is already the whole thing. It doesn't get more true with a backstory attached, and it doesn't get less true when you can't give one. Nobody has to sign off on it first, and nobody gets to hand it back marked as exaggerated.
You don't need proof to say you felt like you didn't matter.
